learnX is University of Hyderabad’s Learning Management System based on Open edX.

Open edX is an open source learning platform that was created by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT) for the biggest online learning portal in the world – edx.org.

Created to fulfil the instructional design needs of various types of educational institutions, Open edX enables instructors to have the tools to teach learners physics, maths, and even acoustics using engaging and interactive tools that are available out of the box. And, there is the ability to integrate multiple third party systems and tools like SCORM, LTI, iFrame so the abilities are boundless.

Even as a simple installation (without any major customisations), Open edX provides for the following content types:

  • Text, images (what you see is what you get editor)
  • Videos
  • Interactive videos and images
  • SCORM, LTI, iFrame
  • Over 18+ types of assessments

A bit of customisation can also lead to use of simulation and virtual labs in the LMS.

Open edX comes in two parts:

a) The LMS:  This constitutes the learner side of the system.

b) The Studio: This is where instructors manage all the course content.
